I got an email from a
subscriber recently that was not only satisfying to read, but much
more importantly, is a great inspiration for enjoyers of red wine,
or any wine for that matter.
Like many folks, this gentleman and his wife had
gone through some very tough financial hardships. These hardships caused them to
have to CONSIDERABLY cut down on spending and essentially focus on
the bare necessities.
So much for wine, right?
Well, as it turned out this subscriber had been
following my newsletter for sometime and really heeded the advice
on making wine. You’ll
recall that in previous installments I’ve discussed that you can
enjoy wine for far less money when you make your own wine and you
CAN make good wine.
What’s really interesting is despite being on a
very limited budget this gentleman was able to get inexpensive wine
kits and after making some batches he moved up to the more
expensive ones.
(For anyone who does not know: A
wine kit is simply the inclusion of most wine making
ingredients sold as one package. The juice, yeast,
sterilizing agents, etc. all sold in the package and the
package is typically in a box.)
This gentleman’s perspective is that the more
expensive wine kits are worth it as they can yield wine of premium
quality. It turns out
that he has been making and enjoying great wine while keeping his
budget down.
The scenario becomes even more
interesting.
He became innovative with his wine making: He had
some professional friends who enjoyed his wine so much that he
bartered some of their services for some of his
wine. He reports
this has been helpful to him.
This is inspiring to hear
about. But
what’s really important here is that it reinforces my
recommendation about making your own wine.
I thought this would be a great time to debunk
some myths about making wine:
Myth #1: Homemade wine is not much
cheaper
Fact: Even the more expensive and high quality
kits can be made for less than the third of the price.
Myth #2: The wine is terrible
Fact: As mentioned, high quality and very
enjoyable homemade wine can be made – whether you do it from
scratch or use kits as the gentleman discussed above
did. With advances in
technology the kits really have been perfected over the years and
can yield some absolutely great wine.
Myth #3: It’s hard to do
Fact: It can be hard but does not have to be.
With the right instructions it does not have to be difficult at
all.
Myth #4: It’s too much fuss and time
consuming
Fact: While there is some time involved (which is
well worth it), with the right instructions and proper planning it
does not have to be this way and rather can be really satisfying
process.
Myth #5: There aren’t many varieties to choose
from.
Fact: Whether you’re making your wine from
scratch or using wine kits there is virtually an unlimited
selection in today’s marketplace.
Finally, one piece of information that the gentleman discussed
above used to make great wine is XXXX XXXXX XXXX
XXXX.
